Remember

I remember the newspaper daily
They would take a pile of them
And use it for the household fuel.

You remember Benkovac at the news,
cold-blooded shoulder hugs
and disbelief.

I remember, shelves were empty.
She took the flour but
there was no sugar.

She remembers a boy poorly dressed,
introduced to the class in the middle of the school year,
his voice thin and broken.

He remembers his only classmate
when he was seven,
and the black uniform man with a rifle.

I still remember the bridges
crashed like a mighty
disconnection augurity.

He remembers the endless vehicle queues
on the roads and eating bacon.

I remember, days were dark
when the night falls and
the stars shone never so bright.

She remembers how she couldn’t
dry her tears after becoming aware
of how it must have felt.

You remember what they told you.
They remember what they told them to.

We remember everything
we would be most grateful to forget
and unanimously forgive.
